To join the Huntsville-Madison County RACES unit you must be a licensed amateur radio operator of Technican Class or higher. You must also complete a RACES application form which includes a request for HMC Emergency Management Agency to perform a background check and the oath of service. After the application has been completed, membership requests will be approved by the RACES Advisory Council and then forwarded to the HMC EMA director for final approval. Upon approval, an official RACES identification card will be issued. Membership has several training requirements, the first of which is certification as a Storm Storm Spotter by the National Weather Service, and completion of some of the FEMA independent study courses At a minimum you will need to complete IS-1.
We hold monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month. The meetings are typically held in the EOC, located downtown by these maps. Park under the parking deck, and look for the lower entrance to the EOC. The meetings usually start at 6pm, and rarely run past 8pm.
