The Huntsville-Madison County RACES unit supports local emergency management by providing direct radio communications between the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Operations Center located in Madison County, the Alabama Emergency Operations Center in Clanton, AL, and other RACES networks in the event of an enemy attack, disaster, or incident which endangers life or property. In addition, qualified amateurs provide augmentation and back-up communications for response agencies and other volunteer organizations. The Huntsville-Madison County RACES unit also assists several other amateur radio volunteer organizations, including ARES and Skywarn. More specifically, the RACES unit assists with the following:
- Auxiliary communications
- EOC assistance
- Stream monitoring
- Skywarn Net control (when Madison County's turn)
- Liason to Skywarn for Madison Co. when Madison Co. Emergency Net (ARES) is called within EOC
